Responsible Materials

Choosing to build green involves responsibly sourced materials. Here are a few things to keep in mind while exploring your options.

Is it locally sourced?

Sourcing material as you can from local fromt local resources cuts down on fossil fuels used to move the materials from one location to another. When it comes to lumber, look for sustainably grown local lumber. We are lucky to have a great resource in California for sustainable lumber from Big Creek Lumber. Big Creek Lumber is known for their environmentally and socially responsible harvest practices.

We also have a great resource for local Mariposa Flagstone, as well as locally batched concrete and other materials.

What is it made from? How does it affect air quality?

Look for non-toxic materials such as water-based paints, stains and sealers as well as carpets made of natural fibers. This will greatly increase the air quality of your home.

Recycled Materials

More and more products are being made from recycled and reclaimed materials. Many of these new products are not only environmentally responsible, they are durable and they look great!

Tell us what you're looking for and we will help you make an informed decision on your building materials.

Building Techniques

Green building technique starts with the site. A well designed site will limit the overall footprint of your new home reducing impact on the natural resources, while simultaneously maximizing natural surroundings to increase energy efficiency of the building. The building should be set to maximize southern exposure for solar systems and to maximize passive solar techniques such as daylighting. The amount of excavation required can be reduced, reducing costs, environmental impact of construction processes, minimizing soil disturbances and erosion control.

Ask us how we can minimize the environmental impact of your new home with responsible building techniques. We will do our best to help you achieve your green goals.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency starts with site development and is considered through out the entire building process all the way down to the last appliance installed in your new home.

tight building envelope and home insulation is key in saving energy. At Lawson Construction we use... insulation

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Building materials with a high thermal mass such as concrete, stone and brick can help retain heat during the cold season and keep the house cool in the summer by preventing temperature fluctuations improving overall home efficiency.

When sourcing new appliance, start by looking for the Energy Star ratingLook for energy efficient light bulbs, water saving shower heads, faucets and toilets etc.

Utilize natural energy sources such as the sun by creating a passive home design. Plant deciduous trees to block heat from the summer sun and allow light through in the winter.

Research alternative power options that will work best with your building site, such as solar, wind-generated electric systems, hydro-electric generation etc.
